DOBAU®-1KS – reliable waterproofing of below-ground components in accordance with DIN 18533

DOBAU®-1KS is a one-component, polymer-modified bitumen thick coating (PMBC) filled with polystyrene foam for structural waterproofing of components in contact with the ground in accordance with DIN 18533. The material is solvent-free, ready to use and meets the requirements of DIN EN 15814 (PMBC – W1, CB2, C1, R3).

Why DOBAU®-1KS?

Typical applications

• Waterproofing of external basement walls and below-ground wall areas

• Waterproofing in the base slab / wall junction area (incl. the end face of the base slab approx. 100 mm)

• Wall plinth/base and transitions in areas in contact with the ground

• Detailing (e.g. penetrations, movement joints) in accordance with DIN 18533-3 – depending on the water exposure class

Application – how to do it professionally

• Substrate: sound, even, free from honeycombing, burrs, open cracks and contamination.

• Fill unsealed recesses > 5 mm (e.g. mortar pockets, open joints, spalls) with a suitable mortar.

• If necessary, level/prepare substrates (e.g. thin coat/levelling plaster, sealing slurry, or scratch coat/spackling).

• Primer: For improved adhesion, DOBAU® Duo Primer (solvent-free) is required.

• Briefly stir the material in the container using a slow-running mixer (anchor stirrer).

• Apply like plaster: at least 2 coats (with or without reinforcing insert) using trowel/spatula/float.

• The 1st coat must be sufficiently dry so that it will not be damaged by subsequent work.

• Weather conditions: component surface and ambient temperature > 5 °C. Protect from rain/frost during application & drying.

• Clean tools with water while still fresh.

Consumption & coating thicknesses (guideline values)

Practical wet film thicknesses – depending on the substrate. Waterproofing is applied in 2 coats.

• W1.1-E (ground moisture / non-pressing water): minimum dry film thickness d_min 3 mm, wet film thickness approx. 4.0 mm
• W1.2-E: minimum dry film thickness d_min 3 mm, wet film thickness approx. 4.0 mm
• W4-E (splash water at the wall base and capillary water): minimum dry film thickness d_min 3 mm, wet film thickness approx. 4.0 mm

Note: In accordance with DIN 18533, an additional thickness allowance (d_z) of at least 25% of the minimum dry film thickness must be applied (increase wet film thickness accordingly).

Don’t forget the protection layer

According to DIN 18533, structural waterproofing must be provided with an additional protection layer (only after sufficient drying). Suitable options include EPS/XPS rigid foam boards, dimpled membranes with a slip layer or foam glass boards. Protection layers can be spot-bonded with PMBC (approx. 1–2 l/m²).

Packaging & storage

• Packaging: 12 l 

• Storage: unopened shelf life at least 12 months; store frost-free; avoid direct sunlight / excessive heat

• Cleaning: when fresh with water; once cured, with DOBAU® SWS bitumen cleaner or commercially available solvents/petrol

Standards & approvals

• Waterproofing in accordance with DIN 18533 (Parts 1 and 3)

• Meets DIN EN 15814 (PMBC – W1, CB2, C1, R3)

• “General building authority test certificate” (abP) for use in transitions to components made of concrete with high resistance to water penetration (PG ÜBB)
