DOBAU®-2KS – reliable waterproofing of below-ground components in accordance with DIN 18533
DOBAU®-2KS is a two-component, polymer-modified bitumen thick coating (PMBC) based on a bitumen emulsion in a paste-like, thixotropic form. It is solvent-free, is chemically activated by mixing both components, and is used to produce durable external waterproofing of structures in accordance with DIN 18533. DOBAU®-2KS meets the requirements of DIN EN 15814 (PMBC-W2A, CB2, C2A, R3).
Why DOBAU®-2KS?
-
High application reliability due to the targeted chemical reaction of the two components
-
Fast drying
-
Seamless, flexible waterproofing with crack-bridging properties
-
High heat resistance as well as high flexibility/elasticity even at low temperatures
-
High ageing resistance
-
Also easy to apply on damp substrates
-
Solvent-free – environmentally friendly
Typical applications
-
Waterproofing against ground moisture and non-pressing water on base slabs and below-ground walls
-
Waterproofing against moderate exposure to pressing water (e.g. backed-up water up to 3 m)
-
Waterproofing against non-pressing water on earth-covered ceilings
-
Waterproofing against splash water at the wall base as well as capillary water in and under below-ground components
-
Bonding of perimeter insulation boards (EPS/XPS) in below-ground areas
Application – how to do it professionally
-
Substrate: sound, even, free from honeycombing, burrs, open cracks and contamination.
-
Fill recesses > 5 mm (e.g. mortar pockets, open joints, spalls) with a suitable mortar.
-
Level unevenness/surface profiling if necessary (e.g. thin/levelling plaster, sealing slurry or scratch coat/spackling).
-
Note on negative-side water exposure: If water exposure from the negative side is expected during the construction phase, pre-treat the substrate with a mineral sealing slurry (MDS).
-
Primer: For improved adhesion, DOBAU® Primer E (solvent-free) is required.
-
Mixing: Briefly stir Component A (emulsion) slowly, add Component B and mix intensively for approx. 2–3 minutes until a homogeneous, lump-free compound is obtained.
-
Pot life: approx. 1 hour at around 20 °C.
-
Application: like plaster, at least 2 coats (with or without reinforcing insert) using trowel/spatula/float.
-
Reinforcement insert: for W2.1-E and W3-E, insert a glass mesh reinforcement after the first working step (after sufficient intermediate drying).
-
Coves/fillets: Form internal corners and wall/floor junctions as coves (possible with DOBAU®-2KS, max. radius 20 mm).
-
Weather conditions: component surface and ambient temperature > 5 °C. Protect from rain/frost during application and drying.
-
Cleaning: Clean tools with water while still fresh.
Consumption & coating thicknesses (guideline values)
The values are practical wet film thicknesses and may vary slightly depending on the substrate. Waterproofing is applied in 2 coats.
- W1.1-E (ground moisture / non-pressing water): minimum dry film thickness dmin 3 mm, wet film thickness approx. 4.0 mm
- W1.2-E: minimum dry film thickness dmin 3 mm, wet film thickness approx. 4.0 mm
- W4-E (splash water at the wall base / capillary water): minimum dry film thickness dmin 3 mm, wet film thickness approx. 4.0 mm
- W2.1-E (moderate exposure to pressing water, backed-up water up to 3 m): 2 coats with glass mesh reinforcement, minimum dry film thickness dmin 4 mm, wet film thickness approx. 5.5 mm
- W3-E (non-pressing water on earth-covered ceilings): 2 coats with glass mesh reinforcement, minimum dry film thickness dmin 4 mm, wet film thickness approx. 5.5 mm
Note: In accordance with DIN 18533, an additional thickness allowance (dz) of at least 25% of the minimum dry film thickness must be applied (increase wet film thickness accordingly).
Protection layer / insulation layer
According to DIN 18533, structural waterproofing must be provided with an additional protection layer (only after sufficient drying). Suitable options include EPS/XPS rigid foam boards, dimpled membranes with a slip layer or foam glass boards. Protection layers can be spot-bonded with PMBC (approx. 1–2 kg/m²). If perimeter insulation boards are used, they can (depending on surface evenness) be fully bonded with DOBAU®-2KS (guideline consumption approx. 3–4 kg/m²).
Application control
According to DIN 18533-3, the wet film thickness must be checked regularly during application (at least 20 measurements per project or per 100 m²). The wet film thickness must be checked separately for each coat.
